The application of ICP DAS environment monitoring solution in the data center in Turkey

The application of ICP DAS’s environment monitoring solution in the data center in Turkey

PET-7060 PoE Ethernet I/O Module and DL-100-E-W Remote Temperature & Humidity Data Logger installed enable access control and environmental monitoring of the server room 24/7. The information detected is transmitted to the control center through Modbus TCP over optical fibers, realizing remote monitoring and control of the entrance and environmental variables. Therefore, the solution reduces the burden on facility personnel carrying out on-site patrols.

Introduction:

Turkcell Data Center situated at Ankara — the capital city of Turkey, is the nation’s largest data center. Being built by the Turkcell group, the data center provides services catering to Turkish companies and public institutions, as well as international corporations.

The data center houses numerous essential equipment and systems, including servers, storage systems, network devices (switches, routers, and firewalls), server racks and cabling systems, etc. In the event of disasters or accidents, the crucial information stored in the data center might be lost, resulting in huge losses. Therefore, strict environmental monitoring and access control in the data center is strongly required.

However, manual inspections of the vast indoor spaces take considerable time and effort. Hence, a Turkish distributor of ICP DAS — ENOKSIS employed our products to ideate and implement a tailored environmental monitoring solution, enabling the client to achieve remote monitoring and control of eight server rooms in the data center. This case study exemplifies how ICP DAS environmental monitoring solution accomplishes monitoring multiple temperature & humidity measurement points and access control remotely.

ICP DAS environmental monitoring solution applied in the data center

In this case study, ENOKSIS installed one PET-7060 PoE Ethernet I/O Module in each of the eight server rooms to monitor and control the entrance at any time, as well as multiple DL-100-E-W Remote Temperature & Humidity Data Loggers to obtain real-time data on environmental variables. A total of 8 PET-7060 and 373 DL-100-E-W were deployed. The data collected are then transmitted to the control center over optical fibers. Subsequently, the management personnel can keep abreast of the server rooms‘ environmental conditions via the control center’s SCADA system. The system structure diagram and illustration are as follows.

Architecture 1

PET-7060 PoE Ethernet I/O Modules installed in server rooms are PoE-compliant, being adequately supplied with power from the PoE switch without complex cabling. PET-7060 offers six relay outputs (channels) and six digital inputs (channels). It is capable of transmitting data on access control to the control center using Modbus TCP. Then, the SCADA system in the control center enables control of the entrance.

When one taps his card against the reader successfully, PET-7060 receives the query from the control center to open the gate. Conversely, when access is denied, the door remains closed, and the data is sent back to the control center for activating alarm notifications. The system achieves access control effectively.

DL-100-E-W Remote Temperature and Humidity Data Loggers (PoE) measure the temperature, humidity, illuminance, and dew point of the environment. The data logger supports Modbus TCP and MQTT, enabling it to send temperature and humidity data to the SCADA system in the control center. Besides, DL-100-E-W only requires one Ethernet cable for data transmission and power supply. This saves on wiring efforts and installation costs and reduces maintenance costs over time.

DL-100-E series – data logger modules are available in both black (DL-100-E) and white (DL-100-E-W). The client adopted DL-100-E-W, which blends into the white color scheme, to make the modules installed less noticeable in the server room.

Benefits:

  • Each module in the DL-100 series features a built-in data logger that records measured information on temperature, humidity, and dew point, along with corresponding dates and timestamps. The data is then saved as CSV files for future review and analysis.

  • DL-100 series – data logger modules with varying Ingress Protection (IP) ratings offer protection against water and dust. These capabilities make them ideal choices for industrial applications across various fields. There is no more concern about damage caused by environmental factors such as excessive quantities of dust or moisture.

  • DL-100-E series – remote temperature and humidity data loggers feature web-based operation and configuration, making installation and settings effortless for users. By logging in through a web browser, users can easily and quickly set up the module without requiring additional software or programming skills.

  • PET-7000 series supports I/O pairing and connection, enabling users to pair AI/DI with AO/DO using Ethernet. One can read data from the AI/DI devices in the field and correspondingly write data to the remote AO/DO channels without the need for any computer or SCADA system.

Complete the energy management system with ICP DAS smart power meters and power meter concentrators

Architecture 2

ICP DAS energy management solutions assist businesses in acquiring consumption data generated by manufacturing plants to optimize energy use and improve energy management. ICP DAS Smart Power Meter (PM) series offers high-accuracy measurements, allowing users to obtain real-time data on the energy consumption of the equipment in the server room.

ICP DAS Power Meter Concentrator (PMC) series features flexibility and completeness in integration capabilities, enabling the series to read and record real-time consumption data measured by smart power meters. The built-in IF-THEN-ELSE statement ensures stable and efficient execution of automated logic. In the event of anomalies in voltage or current measurements, real-time alarm notifications are promptly sent to the management personnel via email, SMS, LINE, WeChat, etc.

  • PMC-2241M IIoT Power Meter Concentrator provides real-time reports on power analysis. Besides, it features a built-in web server that enables users to access energy information through web browsers for analytics. No additional programming or development software is required, achieving cost savings.

  • PMC-2241M IIoT Power Meter Concentrator is equipped with two Ethernet Ports, meaning it has two IP addresses. One IP address is for the equipment connection & PM series connection, creating a subnetwork. Another independent IP address is for the control center connection. Hence, this capability lightens the burden on the Management Information System (MIS) handling a large number of IP addresses.

  • In addition to performing power analysis, PMC-2241M IIoT Power Meter Concentrator enables connection to equipment and devices that support Modbus RTU. This feature allows the management staff to build the networking of machines easily.

  • When the disconnection of the SCADA system happens, PMC-2241M’s communication with power meters and IF-THEN-ELSE statement still function in the normal operating state. This capability tackles the problem of unexpected events. Once PMC-2241M reconnects the SCADA system, its data recovery function allows data transmission back to the control center, ensuring data completeness.

Conclusion:

ICP DAS environmental monitoring solutions achieve temperature & humidity monitoring and access control of server rooms concurrently, creating a conducive and secure environment for the smooth operation of equipment. PoE-compliant modules enable data transmission and power distribution via one cable. This feature solves the problem of complex cabling and reduces costs incurred by additional wiring and maintenance.

We offer architectures that answer company requirements exactly by understanding the field conditions and production line management needs. Besides the Turkcell Data Center, our environmental monitoring solutions have also been successfully implemented by the National Center for High-Performance Computing, a contact lens manufacturer and a semiconductor manufacturer.

ICP DAS has been dedicated to providing comprehensive and customized environmental monitoring solutions, enabling clients to select products or communication types based on the company’s specific field conditions and needs. Equipment networking and digitalization are therefore realized.
